Once every 4 years the world turns to some foreign destination to watch a series of patriotic football nutcases let off flares and run around with their T-shirts over their heads. I refer of course to the football World Cup of 2010. While the internet struggles to cope with the inundated interest in this sport and frenzied gamblers wager their life savings through a Money Bookers on an unknown Uruguay striker the rest of us are left to endure endless hours of Soccer sorry Football coverage on free to air SBS or Foxtel sports.
While 98% of the population now owns a television that is big and heavy enough to crush a small infant and after a few hundred dollars spent on HDMI cables that the sales assistant assures you that you need there is a few hundred dollars left over for a surround sound system to complete your home theatre experience (until 3D comes along!).
However a rather big glitch in this plan is that the world cup is hosted in South Africa this year and South Africans are known for not only their colorful past political endeavors (I use that term loosely) nor their ‘evil’ accents but their apparent love of blowing vuvuzela’s (or lepatata) horns for the entire duration of each and every football match.
They say this is a national tradition however I can never remember any vuvuzela’s at the rugby world cup or international cricket encounters when South Africa are playing. Mind you Football is unlike any other sports when it comes to hooliganism. I doubt you’ll ever see a flare at the tennis nor a riot at the indoor swimming championship!
That said, the extensive use of these horns that resembles the sound of a malaria ridden swarm of insects makes home television viewing with surround sound, well pointless really. Five minutes of this incessant sound would be enough to force even man’s best friend to exit the room and ten minutes may leave you with blood in your ears.
Needless to say, if you wish to replicate this exciting experience at home and soak in some of the cultural sounds of the Serengeti then you need to visit http://www.vuvuzela-time.co.uk/
I dare not explain what you will be presented with upon an internet search but can assure you it won’t be recorded and sold at your local relaxation therapist office.
Enjoy!
